Lots of products call themselves eco-friendly. Fewer can show you why. Here's how we decide, and how you can check for yourself.
Our rule: every item has to prove it
An item can only go into a Campus Kitsy Eco-Friendly kit if it carries at least one real, checkable attribute:
- Certified organic, such as GOTS-certified organic cotton
- Recycled materials, ideally verified by a standard like the Global Recycled Standard
- Solid bamboo, like bamboo hooks or frames
- Plastic-free packaging or materials
- Refillable or reusable by design
Each item in an Eco kit shows its attribute right on the page.
Labels we don't count
- "Bamboo" sheets and fabrics. Most are rayon or viscose made from bamboo through chemical processing, so we don't treat them as eco on their own.
- OEKO-TEX. It's a useful safety label (tested for harmful substances), but it isn't a sustainability standard.
When there's no eco version
Some dorm basics simply don't have a strong eco option yet. In those cases we may choose a certified responsible brand (Certified B Corp, 1% for the Planet or Climate Neutral Certified) and label it clearly as a responsible brand, not an eco product.
Start with the room
Our Eco-Friendly Dorm Starter includes organic cotton bedding, certified recycled-material electronics, solid bamboo storage and hooks, and a refillable bottle.
