Most dorm packing lists are either too short or wildly too long. This one is organized the way a dorm room actually works: bed, bath, desk, kitchen and laundry.
Bed
Dorm mattresses are usually twin XL, not standard twin. Check your student's housing page before buying sheets. Then add a comforter or blanket, a mattress topper, and under-bed storage, since most rooms are short on closet space.

Everything the empty room is missing.
Bath
Shared bathrooms mean everything travels: a shower caddy, shower shoes, quick-dry towels and a robe.

Carry it in, carry it out.
Desk
A good desk lamp, a surge-protected power strip (many housing offices require surge protection), and a few organizers go a long way.
Kitchen
Most dorms allow microwaves. Many restrict kettles and other heating appliances, so check the housing rules first. Bowls, a few utensils and food storage containers cover most needs.

Laundry
A collapsible hamper, detergent pods, mesh wash bags and a drying rack keep laundry day simple.

What to skip
- Anything your housing office bans. Common examples include candles, string lights in some halls, and certain heating appliances.
- Duplicates with a roommate. Coordinate on shared items like a mini fridge or rug.
- Big furniture before you see the room. Measure first.
